C7 - Sanday News, January 31, 1982 Ree women Breast feeding the baby at work NEW YORK(UPI) - A new mother working full-time does not have to give up breast-feeding her infant if she does a little planning and consults with her employers, says nutritionist Frances Stout. Mrs. Stout is a working mother who breast-fed her baby. She is also a con- sultant on breast-feeding to a health and beauty aids manufacturer. She says young mothers with children under age 6 are the fastest growing segment of the female work force — 42 per cent of them now are working. In addition, many older women who have postponed childbearing until they are well established in careers do not want to give up their jobs to devote full time to motherhood. It is generally thought that when breasi-feeding a baby — something more and more doctors find beneficial to both baby and mother — the mother must stay home for up to six months after the birth. Mrs. Stout, a consultant to the New York-based Bristol- Myers Corp., said many women fear they will fail to produce enough milk to satisfy their child’s needs if they are unable to be present for the baby’s regular feedings. “But supplementary bottles do not necessarily decrease the (mother’s) milk supply,” Mrs. Stout said in a recent interview. “The milk supply is established in the first four to six weeks; then introduce the supplementary bottle,”- she said. Mrs. Stout said the first. thing an expectant mother should do when she makes the decision to breast-feed is to tell her employer so arrangements can be made. If the baby cannot be brought to the office, the mother should arrange to have time. to express her milk into a bottle during the time she normally would feed her baby at home. If there is no refrigerator in which to store the bottied milk, she said a vacuum bottle pre-chilled with ice, can be used. The ice should be emptied just before filling the bottle with milk, she added. The chilled milk can keep for 48 hours and the baby can drink it from a bottle when the mother is at work. “Breast-feeding is a natural act and yet a woman can be subject to riducule or at least find no sympathy in a working environment,” Mrs. Stout said.
