Ao-Sunday News, October 19, 1980 editorial page The greater good West Vancouver council will be well advised to reject the application to have Fisherman's Wharf rezoned for a townhouse development. In so doing, council will be serving the greater good of the greater number, as well as endorsing the recom- mendations against the development already submitted by the Advisory Planning Com- mission and the Advisory Design Panel. West Van does not NEED 24 luxury townhouses on this particular site. They would do little or nothing to ease the municipality’s real housing need -- affordable accommodation on a more modest scale for senior citizens and young families born and raised as children in the community. West Van boaters DO urgently need the 75-100 virtually irreplaceable moorages that would be lost. They and many boaters from farther afield need the marina’s big lift and repair facilities -- which are not duplicated for many miles around. And, especially in emergencies, Fisherman’s Wharf offers a haven of safety for all the hundreds of pleasure craft sailing off West Van and in Howe Sound. : At one stage of the application the developers hinted that, if refused their application, they might buy Fisherman's Wharf anyhow and close down its facilities. Legally, there's nothing to stop them. It’s hard to believe, however, that a reputable company would flout the wishes of council, acting in the best interests of the community, by actually adopting such a dog- in-the-manger course. We hope the implied “threat” to council was nothing more than the slip of an overly enthusiastic tongue. Western response In a much publicized comment this summer Prime Minister Trudeau is reported to have told Opposition Leader Joe Clark: “I came into politics to keep Quebec in Con- federation. Somebody else will have to save the West.” We presume that's exactly what Western Premiers Bill Bennett, Peter Lougheed and Sterling Lyon have in mind. Mr. Trudeau can hardly grumble if they took him seriously. sunday north shore Month Varies VOM HA news NEWS, ADVE HTISSING CLATSOP TE OC RAC LE A Te oty 985-213) 980-0511 986-6222 986 1337 Publisher (beter ‘perc & i604, 98S 2131 Associate Publisher Editor in ( het Advertising Oiled tor Wa itoesr! vat abears Maresh Weaght bo taeda Classified Manage: Croative & Office Administrator Production Dir oc tor Ox eS PY 0 ee there tas Pata Lorre be emeve es Voayer Mel sive Managing Editor News € ditor Photography Pasty bo aace oot nr Pe wee th fh kh we Accounting Supervisor thar boar yp Boecers North Shore Nowe avede ena Pr Cee ec Co aeey eT CC Pe eC Bees bebe UME ge UH Pe ae age the t ‘ “a Hk tet i OW Me eden et ee da fgeatt Prva ' ' ' my wot Pout fete ett ‘ hoe Pate fa . ‘ en Mio Pearl ate © Neti wraps veat gotnoe 4 ve ‘ fosfue ony Lr ' ee CS 1 Ad oagyt 4 “ae tea ' wee 1 i ny mt ny a ' ‘ tary Pogeeng tah iy. Whenever there has been a strong moral standard up- lifted there has been a return to law and order; however, where immorality and compromise of conviction is experienced, anarchy exists. The Christian community which is referred to as the “salt of the earth” in the Bible, has its work cut out for it if it is going to in- fluence or flavor our society. Unfortunately the vast majonty of Christians today are typified by those who don't want to get involved. Certainly moral values and bibhcal principles go hand in hand and should be sup- ported or advocated by every true Christian. We are at a tame when the real Christians need to stand up and be counted. In a time when people are insisting on their rights the Christian must also stand up for his nghts ... to hold the banner of truth high against all forms of wickedness and immorality. The Christan Church has had its champion truth-bearers like Martin Luther, John Wesley and Wilham Booth but it also needs the vocal voice in the political arena and market place of today. “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus” is a refrain of a familiar hymn of the church and unless the church of Jesus Christ gets involved. unless the Chnstian speaks up for what is mght, the authorities will continue to pass laws to include abor- tion, acceptance of homo- sexuals, Sunday shopping. use of drugs, etc The moral cmsis facing the world today can be changed u Chnstian people. regard- less of denominational Standing to be counted preference, who agree on the essentials of moral principles, the authority of the scripture and the Lord- ship of Jesus Christ, will sunday brunch by Noel Wright another two years in thew present seats Perennial candidate Gordon Rowntree has “not yet made a decision” but don't count him out of the aldermanic face yet (North Van Disinet’s Ernie Crise suffered just about as many defeats before he suddenly the poll last year) former alderman Doreen Blackburn 1s) having some pre nomination fun Asked whether theres any truth to the rumor that shes planning topped And to run for mayor the lady rephed after oa Jengths silence yvoure weloome te ask” Und this mean ne comment we inquired l didn t Say that she tctorted Meanwhile the West Van bE dectors Assowia trom holds at first camdsudates meeting this 3 at SO pm in No Doasads Church Hall Levels Thursday Ot Upper Way though association presadeut Jack McC onville sand briday he knew of ne and Laylor Confiomed challengers te the in cumbents On the se tool board sone in North Van veteran ine um bent Dorothy Lynas. with author Coawftord Killian and Chief Philtp doe. are the Chote oof the NN Nuters Assoutation binte Samnfleld will cun again tut David Crafg i capected te retue So ou West Van trustec Aadrey Sofoaky. icaving incumbents Mark Sages and Norm Alban cle thon acehing ore Stay tumed hots cao happen before Oct 2° Puzzled by the conundrum of science vs Darwin vs the religion Book of Genesis?
