Twenty-six years later, the Vancouver Canucks, hoping to become the fastest hockey team in the world, embark on a test of heart and foot- wear as they today an- nounced participation in the first-ever Labatt’s 24-Hour Relay at Swangard Stadium, Jane 21 and 22. The joming upwards of 30 other ranning teams that will be competing for the most self- punishment and over-all distance covered during the 24-hour period. Each team will be soliciting piedges from the public on a per mile basis and the biggest winner will be the British Columbia Lions Society for Crippled Children, beneficiary of all pledges. The 24-Hour Relay is a unique event, never before staged in Vancouver, and the Canucks will be the only professional sports team represented. Some of the players who will be seen roaring about the Stadium include “Bullet” Brent Ashton, Curt “The Comet” Fraser, “Rocket” Rick Blight, Harold “Swoosh” Snepsts, and the two Gary's, “Afterbumer” Bromley and “Fast Lane” Lupul The entire 1!7-man unit will be under the direction of a real runner in his own right, “Dazzling” Dave Duna,, Canucks’ assistant coach. The fun (fun?) begins at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 21 and winds up at the same time the following morning. Runners will be arranged in a set order by team captain ‘Dunn and each will ron a three-mile leg in turn. With 17 runners on the squad, each can expect to run from three to five times (groan!) during the day-long span. The course will consist of one lap of the track in Swan- gard Stadium together with a road and trail route around the park outside’ the stadium. that they will be delighted to sign autographs and meet spectators as long as said players are not running at the time.
