Dear Editor: MAIL BOX: Friday, January 28, 2000 — North Shore News - 9 new non-smoking businesses Vm part of that 75% and J urge people who support this measure fo patronize these newly smoke-free places. The Canadiin Cancer Society has just finished promoting National Non-Smoking Week, and the timing couldn't be bet- ter for us to publicly congratulate those hospitality businesses that are committed to protecting the health of their employees. They have done so by complying with the Worker's Compensation Board standards tor s“oke-free workplaces, and we say “Bravo!” Since April 15, 1998, most businesses in B.C. have operat- ed in a smoke-free environment; the public entertainment and hospicality industries were given until Jan. 1, 2000, to match them. Many of the chemicals to which these workers have been exposed to daily are preven carcinogens. How to turn superstitions Hospital chapel is important into some windfall profits Dear Editor: Re: how to have success in life and business. _ Want to have good luck and success in fife? Foliaw us to the Orient, where, in Hong Kong for example, they take their superstitions seriously. Especially when billions of dollars are a stake. So, as Hong Kong starts to unload . some of the stock it bought in 1998 to head off a crash then, the numbers surrounding the sale seem suspiciously lucky. The government is offer: ing $33.3 billion HK ($4.3 billion GS) of stock in Hong Kong companies. The num- ber three in the Cantonese dialect sounds like the word for life. Shares worth $9.99 billion HK ($1.3 billion US) are reserved for institutions, nine connotes longevity. Local buyers get the remaining $23.3 billion HK ($3 billion US). The numerals 233 suggest “casy to live.” The stock is packaged in fund shares, with each unit priced at $12.88 HK — which stands for and sounds like “easy to prosper.” And, trading started Nov. 12, a good day to exercise authority, says Steven Post, CEO of the Geomancy-Feng Shui education organization in San Francisco. Our government rakes no . such . action’. to _ protect” It's been great to see the comments from workers who appreciate the new protection; obviously their companies are places where employees feel free to speak out. Pm convinced that this standard will bring positive returns tor both the employees and their companies. We know how heavy the lobbying of both the Workers’ Compensation Board and the government was to soften or delay the implementation. “Bravo” again to those who had the ability co withstand the pressure and who worked with the staff of the WCB to make this standard a reality. Perhaps the facilities which are loudly defying this health measure could look at the 75% of British Columbians who don’t smoke as a potential market. Hong Kong authorities plan it all this way? Just a coinci- dence, they say, with a big smile on their faces. Adds a banker involved in the offer- ing, “superstition is never the basis for pricing a capitz! mar- kets transaction.” Still, the offering was oversubscribed by a factor of three (remem- ber? three connotes “good: life”). Go figure it out! And good luck to you in your life and your dusiness! (Especially in the upcoming tucky and prosperous year of the dragon!) Perry Dane North Vancouver from fair alien dogma. North Vas:couver . to well-be Dear Editor: I was shocked when | read Timothy Renshaw’s column, (Jan. 16, Hospital in need of some spiritual healing) about the chapel at Lions Gate Hospital. 1 was in the hospital twice in the last couple of years, and 1 know how important the chapel is. On neither occasion was J able to get around. Now diat 1 am home again [ am still unable to get to church. There is no one co take me, so I watch Daily Mass on Channel 40 at 8 a.m. You can’t know how much it means to be deprived of going to mass. When 1 lived — in Springfield, Mo., 1 met a priest there at the hospital who was the chaplain. He had gone on vacation and while there contracted polio. When he was able he was brought back home to Springfield, where he lived in the hospital. He said mass cvery morn- ing in his wheelchair and visit- ed the bed-bound during the Friday, Saturda: One final comment about the WCB recently inspecting 39 establishments: the WCB was correct in taking such action. It has bent over backwards to give these businesses tinw to adjust, but when faced with wilful non-compliance, the WCB has no option but to uphold the regulations created for work- ers health. This isn't a game of chicken — we're talking abour the health of our fellow citizens. Employers have long asked for a fevel playing field — it’s time to get on with it! Barbara Kaminsky, CEO Canadian Cancer Society, B.C. and Yukon Division ing of LGH paiienis It meant so much to the patients. [have been in other hospi- tals that have chapels and I, a visitor to one of the patients, found the chapel a very good place to go and pray for them and the others £ saw that sure- ly needed praying for. Mass is satd in the airport in Chicago, and surely every nationality under the sun goes through there.
