If you get a chance to visit a woollen, mill, you'll get some bargains, especially in plaids. AUSTRIA, GERMANY, SWITZERLAND AND THE REST -OF NORTHERN EUROPE: Suit yourself. Everything costs a fortune. If you fancy’ cuckoo clocks and other watches and _ timepieces, you'll pay just about the same or more than at home. I couldn't believe the prices! Cameras and other stuff—know what the local Canadian prices are and then buy cautiously. You may get lucky but the saddest tourist . is the one who- buys something and then sees it at home for half the: price! Your best bet is to buy souvenirs that you can't . possibly get at home such as pottery or gold charms. SPAIN: Lladro figurines: They're half of what you'd pay in Canada. Local weaving: bedspreads, ponchos, pillows and wall hangings are lovely and never wear out. Very colorful, but the big things weigh so much that “priced ~ , ; ; ; - . a . | | t | 0 Suits and jackets are expensive, but beautiful, especially if you have time to get them made-to-measure. Gloves are a_ fantastic bargain. Purses are ex- pensive, but made to last. Look for the local artisans” market for carvings and ~ ‘paintings. There is lovely pottery but don’t ask me to - Carry your bags! ITALY: They do some marvellous ‘things with furniture and accessories. Especially modern-type glass tables and electrical fixtures such as hanging lights. Clothing is “outta sight” and shoes are too—if you're feet _are small enough to get. fitted. Excellent value in kids shoes, if the kids are there to try on. The fancy inlaid leather can be bought for a reasonable price if you avoid plushy shops. Table lighters and ashtrays in onyx are quite nice, and the lighters WORK. | : “Capo de Monte” figurines are much cheaper here—if you like them (check out Birks price list before you go). Don't shop in Murano for Venetian glass unless you have more money than brains—small shops, _ although full of all sorts of junk, will probably yield some lovely pieces when you look carefully. NORTH AFRICA (MOROCCO, ALGIERS, TUNISIA) Look for bargains—and bargaining! Never pay the price asked or you'll spoil the shopkeeper’s day. Caftans, leather goods (although some of the leather is cured in camel urine and smells like sin), hammered metal goods such as plates and pots. A lot of the stuff is shoddy and they have no morals’ when it comes to ripping-off the tourist. If you want to be encumbered with something almost impossible to carry home, Tunisian bird-cages made of white filigree make beautiful plant-hangers. Fairly cheap. Although I would have loved a pair of you'll hate yourself when - them, my good sense made you have to pack them. Leather goods! DOES IT ALL! PORTUGAL: Think of gloves’ and embroidered tablecloths, napkins and blouses. I - bought a very ‘nice: set of tablewear for.less than $20 in Lisbon. You couldn't buy the material, alone, in Canada for twice the price. Tiny figurines, especially nice for Christmas are levely—and fairly cheap. They do some nice things. with metal but be careful of .the quality—some of the stuff is lead-based and the covering comes off right away. One thing I forgot to mention—when in Venice, look for some hand em- broidery. It’s usually done by the nuns. in local convents and the set of table linen I bought for under $50 has survived many washings. The hand-done lace. is exquisite, if you. enough money to subsidize the entire economy of Italy. If you must, be satisfied with handkerchiefs—which look and feel very elegant in an evening bag. (Beat Kleenex all to hell!) The trouble with shopping in Europe is that you either cart the stuff home or have it shipped and spend weeks rubbing your hands in despair. We bought two tables in Sorrento, made of beautiful hand-inlaid wood. They made them “to-order” in a unique shade of green ash. Our Chargex card was accepted with great aplomb. Needless to say, we sweated blood until they were delivered (and we paid some crazy amount of duty!) But, come’ they did! Beautifully packed—as a matter of fact, the cases were so well-done that the man in the Air Canada warehouse Offered to uncrate them for free if he could have the crates. He got them! The tables couldn't be replaced for any money!
