[c's the game of hockey. Even non-bockey fans have probably seen on the news the ugly owo-handed swing to the side of Brashear’s head that has disgusted fans and non-fans of the game alike. There is no doube that had the incident taken place outside of the rink, the Crown would have quickly pressed charges. That it did net was, in part, due to the National Hockey League’s stated desire to keep the courts cut Uf the process. Now that a charge has been laid, where will the policing stop? Stick swinging in junior hockey is not as rare as we might want to believe. What about a punch to the head when the other kid isn’t expecting it? That’s assault in the back alley. What about violence in other sports — say a baseball throv: 1 at the head? If professional sports leagues want to retain control of their own games, suspensions for violent assaults aced co send 4 meaningful message to olaycrs and public alike.
