THE YWCA is hosting a prostate health forum for men and their fami- fies on Thursday, Sept. 21 in Vancouver. The forum is being held in partnership with Vancouver Hospital as = part oof, September's Prostate Awareness Month. One out of every cight men in Canada will be diag- nosed with prostate cancer. Morcover, many men do not seek information or help on this sensitive issue. A panel of health care experts will icad discussion and answer questions from the audience. Panelists are slated to include Dr. Larry Goldenberg, urologist; Dr. Joyce Davison, nurse scientist; Dr. Stacy Elliot, fertility spe- cialist, Dr. Kelly Farnsworth, Support A grief support group . for teenagers is starting this week in North Vancouver. : The support group is slat- . ed to start on Tuewlay and runs 12 weeks from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The group is facilitated by an art therapist and music therapist. The program is for teens ages 13 to 17 who are . grieving the loss of a parent, naturopathic physician, Sabrina Goan, social worker, Vancouver Cancer Centre; Craig Asmundson, a patient. The forum takes place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the YWCA Health and Wellness Centre, fourth floor, 535 Hornby St. No _ pre-registration — is required. For information call 895-5777. The following information was provided by the YWCA: B prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in men; Bone out of every cight men in Canada will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime; @ more than 20,060 men in Canada are diagnosed with prostate cancer yearly; M there are still no definitive answers about what factors put men at most risk; for grievi sibling, grandparent or triend. The teen grief program came about after a survey of North Shore health care ser- vices indicted more support services were needed for teenagers struggling to cope with the death of a loved one. Teens, although often reluctant to participate in counselling or groups, may benefit from the support of peers who have experienced a HEALTH - Prostate info panel planned Bas men age, they are more likely to develop prostate can- cer. Prostate cancer is usually found in men older than age 50 although most men with prostate cancer are about 70 years old when diagnosed; @ the risk of developing prostate cancer is greater for a man whose father or brother has prostate cancer; ia the rate of prostate cancer varies with different racial groups. Black men have a higher risk than Caucasians. It is even less common in men of Asian descent; B some studies have suggest- ed that the following may be related to the development of prostate cancer: high fat diets, jobs with exposure to vine, cadmium or pesticides, or sex- ual factors fike hormone levels and sexually transmitted dis- ease.
