console are quite wide, limiting
feet room especially. for the pas-
senger, and the window sill is a
little high. However, the snug fit
Offers a feeling of security on
those aforementioned twisty
roads.

The three-spoke steering wheel
(with airbag) doesn’t tilt up and
down; nevertheless, the large
round white-on-black analogue
instruments (reminiscent of old
British Smiths gauges) are clearly
visible. The wide centre conscle
features controls and instruments
pointed directly at the driver. Well
bolstered sports seats offer good

New Mazda RX-7 moves in fast company

A Storage area behind the front
seats with two lockable bins offers
some usable storage space. Access
to a rather shallow trunk is via a
lift-up hatchback and there is a
pass-through to the trunk from
the passenger compartment.

Two trim levels are offered,
base and Touring. The Touring
option adds leather interior,
sunroof, CD player and a low-
distortion Bose Acoustic Wave
speaker system to a list of stand-
ard features which includes power
windows, power mirrors, AM/FM
stereo casseite; and cruise control.
(i. wonder how much weight they
could have saved by eliminating
power windows, mirrors, and
cruise control?)

The base price of the new RX-7
is a hefty $41,000, about $5,000

ed coupe. However, the new price
must be compared with the cora-
petition. The RX-7 is now in the
same class as the Nissan 300ZX
Turbo, Dodge Steaith Turbo
AWD, Chevrolet Corvette and
Porsche 968, all of which are in
the same price range, or even
higher.

The lower-priced, normally-
aspirated RX-7 is no longer of-
fered. This would appear to leave
a gaping hole in Mazda’s sports
car lineup between the $18,600
Miata and the $41,000 RX-7. A
Mazda spokesperson claims this
will be filled by the new 1992
front-wheei-drive MX-6 coupe.

At present, Mazda has no plans

to build a convertible RX-7.
Mazda engineers claim it would be
too difficult and too expensive to
alter the space-monocoque design
of the coupe since it incorporates
the roof as a structural member.
Personally, I think it’s only a
matter of time before a convert-
ible is introduced. A true sports
car is a convertible, right Mazda?
