NORM MacNamara is cautious in announcing his goals for the coming hockey season. The second year coach of the NorWest Caps (formerly the North Shore Griffins) has a good reason for choosing his words carefully. The Caps ended last season a piriful 5-32-2 (win- -loss- tic), but there’s an optimistic air at this year’s training, camp. “We did some heavy recruiting over the summer months,” MacNamara admit- ted. “This year we'll have the experience we didn’t have last year.” That experience will come in the form of three or four veteran players, something the young club didn’t have fast season. While recalling the team's dismal play, MacNamara dida’t attempt to shift the onus onto anyone else. But the 32- year- old benchboss said he’s better prepared to handle the coming, season. “I came onto the team late Jast year, at the end of July and north shore news @ SPORTS | NorWest Cans set for new season took over the general manag- ers duties the following August,” he said. “Ideally all the general manager's duties should be fultilled in the sum- mer and the coaching should be addressed from then on ... 1 didn’t get that last year.” It also didn’t heip the Caps much when the expansion team was put together without the benefit of a league expan- sion draft. “The last five games of fast season were the toughest for the team,” 9 MacNamara recounted. “Especially for our Only 45 M Minutes To A younger players, they went through an awful lor.” Despite MacNamara’s opti- mism far the Junior PB ccam. the Caps’ work is already cut out for them. The team has lost some of its key plavers from last season including goaltender Jordan Sigalet who was drafted by the Prince George Spruce Kings. Other notable departures are Jason Taylor, Adam Stefishen, Devon Walsh, —Claytan Whitman, and Tomo Ushida. “Some teams are out to win the league championships and Wednesday, September 9, 1998 — North Shore News — 39 Td like to be able to do that too,” MacNamara continued. “However, our goal is to take our vounger players and devel- op them ... help them advance toa higher league.” If the Caps’ mandate is one of player development above all clsc, this may prove to be a massive benefit to the young players. However, how will it sit with North Shore fans? “['m sure the community § ; would love to see an improved : ee team with five or six veteran CAPS coach Norm MacNamara is optimistic See Team page 4% his team will fare better.
