54 -- Friday, April 10, 1998 — North Shore News Pro proffers his plan for nacking Organization the key to a smoother move There’s nothing more frustrating about a move than getting to your new home or apartment and not being able to find that particular thing you need right at the moment. More often than not it’s something you real- ly can’t afford to wait to find (tke that extra box of baby diapers), can’t easily replace (a presecip- tion medication from your doctor near vour ol: home), or just can’t do without (thar favorite toy that a young child just won't go to sicer without). OF course, everyone plans well in advance to avoid these kinds of situations. But, more often than nor, in the usual rush and flurry of activity that accompanies even the most well-planned move, these good intentions sometimes tall by the wayside. There’s just too much to be done in too short a time and most who move usually resort to grabbing the fattest magic marker around the house and scribbling a few cryptic notes on the outside of each box. Unfortunately, they're notes that are usually nearly impossible to deci- pher once you reach your destination, especially ifevervone in the family’s been he Iping out with the marking pot. “My stuff” written in an adolescent's wi ‘oabbly hand can easily cover everything from fibrary books and long- -past-due honzework to dirty laundry and smelly running shocs, Mike I Sage, the marketing VP at Altied Van Lines, whose national organization moves about 10, 000 families a year, has a few suggestions for avi oiding cataclysmic upheaval thar can surround move time. BH Make up a simple contents list (handwrite it, type it, or do it up on a computer), and have it photocopied at the local copy shop on the brightesz paper they have available. The list can be as simple as the name of the person packing the box, the room it came from, and what's going inside. Also get some wide, clear adhesive tape tor packing bexes, and some magic markers ia different colour for evervone who's doing a packing chore). M Give a tew of these sheets te evervene in the family, and tell them co fill them out as they're filling the boxes. Remind them to print! Then, when they've filled a box, tell them to tix the sheer co the outside, making sure to rape down all four sides o the page so it's not easily torn off, fi When the movers (or vou) offload the boxes from the van or truck, you'll not only have a list- ing of where cach box goes, but also what's in it, and who packed it. It also gives you a handy checklist, just to make sure everything arrived. B The second method, which involves number- ing the boxes and keeping a separate inventory also works well, reports LeSage, but usually onty when one family member is put in charge of keeping the fists. “You have to make someone (and it doesn't only have to be Mont or Dad, or the female half ofa partnership) the “Move King” for the entire packing process, and they have ro take charge of two key parts of the move. They have te know who’s packing what, and they have te be there to check the box before it’s se. iled and confirm the contents on their list,” he LeSage suggests getting the most organized family member to take on the job of “Move King,” and says that a special reward for the job isn't entirely out of tine. “When you trade otf the cost ofa dinner, a special show, a focal trip or a special outing against the peace of mind yowll gain trom having someone firmly on top of the packing process, you'll usually find that See Reward page 65 . << Soren Frederiksen HOME LIFE] 986-43 7i #10-1199 LYNN VALL=Y RD., N.
