passes at age 87

NORTH Vancouver Canon
Stanley Smith passed away
Sunday at age 87.

Canon Smith, active as an
Honorary clergyman at St.
Martin’s Church in) Nerth
Vancouver, was long involved
in the ‘Anglican Church
Ministry and che Missions to
Seaman field.

The following information
is excerpted from a biographi-
cal article on Canon Smith by
North Vancouver District his-
torian Roy J.V. Pallant:

Before his retirement, his
ability to serve: God and his
people with intelligent kind-
ness, goodwill and a great
sense of humor, was applicd
in his capacity as a Chaplain
to Missions to Seamen. He
was an Anglican priest who
sometimes particd as often as
seven nights a weck, all in the
line of duty.

His job was to provide a
home-like atmosphere at the
Vancouver headquarters and
entertain hundreds of lonely
and homesick seamen who

passed through the doors of

Flying Angel House, 50
North Dunlevy, Vancouver.

In December cach year,
Canon Smith's tiny office was
piled high with shoe boxes
filed with small gifts, writing
materials, roiletrics and
candy.

Denated and packed by
various churches and charita-
ble organizations, the boxes
were taken aboard ships by
Canon Smith to be distrib-
uted to men who would be at
sea on Christmas Day.

In 1973 Flying Angel
House was just one of 95
such clubs around the world
sponsored by the Anglican

Andrea Kiss

Smith had been in the
Missions to Seamen field for
36 years and his father had
been similarly involved before
him. Canon Smith had
worked in the Middle East,
South Africa and England
before coming to Canada.

Canon Smith was also in
charge of three satellite club
houses, one in New
Westminster sponsored by
Holy Trinity, and one on the
North Shore at the corner of
St. Andrews and First Street,
North Vancouver, sponsored
by St. John the Divine.

By the time he retired in
1975 he had completed 40
years in the Anglican Church
Ministry and 38 of them with
Missions to Seamen in vari-
ous parts of the world.

The Board of Directors of the North Shore counselling
Centre is pleased to announce the appointment of Andrea
Kiss as Executive Director of the Centre, effective
January 20, 1998. She takes over from Don McLean who has
been acting in an interim capacity sirice August 1997.

combined with her experience as a teacher and community
