The 19-year-old is one of a number of North Shore athletes who returned from the Canada Summer Games in Brandon, Manitoba with medals Girke, of West Vancouver, won a bronze medal in women’s [MCO windsurf- ing. An accomplished sailor — she’s competed at numer- ous national and internation- al Laser I competitions — Girke seemed as surprised as anyone at her medal-winning performance on Pelican Lake. “1 just started windsurf- ing for fun a few years ago; when it was too windy to sail, P'd just jump on a board,” Girke said Wednesday. “Then J started getting better and better at it. She aiso credits her spon- sor, West Vancouver fawver John Richardson, for her success, Girke is unsure if a wind- surfing carcer is in the cards, and says right now she is just PROUDLY wearing their freshly-minte the University of British Columbia. “I want to keep on doing well at school, and Pll just windsurf whenever,” the West Van grad says. She adds thar “one day, potentially, yes” she might aspire to the World Cup windsurfing tour.
