gain for city ir amalgamation Dear Editor: Your Sept, 22 editorial calling for amalgamation of North Vancouver City and = North Vancouver District is right on ... right on for the citizens of North Vancouver District, but it would be financial folly for those of us who reside in North Vancouver City. Any of your readers will recog- nize that all the talk of amalgama- tion comes from councillors in the district, while those of us in the city never mention the “A” word. The reasons are quite simple and if’ you had done due diligence before writing the editorial. you would have come to the conclusion that the majority of city residents have ... amalgamation wil! only benefit the overtaxed and infrastruc- ture starved denizens of the district. Taxpayers in the district who will face millions of dollars: in ‘expenditures for infrastructure improvements are casting a jealous eye at the $30 million fund which the. city has been able to build up over the past I5 years. through sound financial management. With the development of Lower Lonsdale lands. over the next few years this amount will climb to weli over $50 million. it may sound selfish on nly part for being against amalgamation, but 1 will never be willing to open up the city wallet to those inthe district who have foclishly squandered their tax sale land funds over the past 20 years. 1: would be horrified at the thought of letting the district coun- cillors decide the fate of North Vancouver City’s heritage funds, The city and district share the services, that make fiscal sense: police, recreation, health, scheol and now the museum. The district and city are good neighbors, but they better keep their hands out of our pockets. Bill Bell Councillor, City of North Vancouver No justice Dear Editor: May ft please add my voice to the countless’ others who have writen complaining about the lack of justice in Canada. For very many years (and | have lived here over 40) | have held the opinion that this was a most wonderful country but with an cnormous number of laws and very little justice. It seems that many others are of the same opinion and although the quote is from the Gilbert and Sullivan play — The Mikado — |} firmly believe we should “let the punishment fit the crime.” John S.
