Columbia have compiled a list
to help reduce home and office
waste,

Reduce

Canadians use over 6 tonnes of

new packaving each year. Seventy
percent of it is used to ship products,
In our global economy, the wooden
pallets. plastic pallet wrapping and

strapping, cardboard boxes and other

specialized packaging taterials area
major contributor to our local waste
Streams.

Consumers can reduce the con-
sumption of transport packaging. and
support local industry by buying
locally produced products.

Repair and re-use

Landfills overflow with items that
could easily provide years of use.

UNIVERSITY OF British
Columbia (UBC) opens its
doors .this weekend, Oct. 13-
‘15, to garden buffs.

During the open house weekend,
visitors can learn how to grow a
rare alpine flower, redesign their
front yard with a computer or tour
:the UBC Botanical Garden with
gardener David Tarrant.

Saturday and Sunday, visitors
‘cun attérid the fifth annual Apple
Festival at the botanical garden,
where more than 60 rare and exotic
- Varieties ‘of apples are available for
tasting.

Apple-lovers can make their
own cider with a press, buy 40 dif-
ferent types of apples by the kilo-
gram or ene of 27 varicties of apple
trees to plant at home:

Judy Newton will guide tours of the
botnical garden. On Saturday and
Sunday they will) be available 10

Meanwhile, visitors who bring
photos of their yard or garden can
“sit down’ with landscape architee-
ture students and go over design
ideas using computer simulations.
