By Gerry Frechette Contributing Writer It is called the PPG-Firestone Indy Lights Championship, or Indy Lights for short. At Vancouver, the series race is called the Concord Pacific Challenge, and it goes There will be a lot of local inter- est in the race this year, as two Vancouver-area drivers are entered. Greg Moore of Maple Ridge needs little introduction, as the 19 year-old is in his second year of competition in the series, and has been challeng- ing for victories all season long. In fact, he won the first race in Phoenix, and has been among the front-runners everywhere else. so there is no reason to think that won't continue in Vancouver. Recently announced additional sponsorship suppost may be enough to see Moore back in the victory cir- cle in front of the hometown fans. Making his Indy Lights debut at Vancouver, and hoping to make a big splash in the process, is Trevor Seibert of Langley. Seibert has starred in Showroom Stock and Formula Atlantic cars on previous Molson Indy weekends, so it would be no surprise to see him do well in Indy Lights. too. He'll be driving the Canaska entry out of Toronto, previously dri- ven twice this year by Patrick Carpentier. Like last year, the Tasman Motorsports team from the U.S. dominates the series, with one of the three team drivers having won every race, except the one that Moore did. Steve Robertson leads the points standings at this writing, so his team- mates and he will have a lot to say about who wins the race. Still, the Concord Pacific Challenge is the best chance for victory by a Vancouver-area driver. Automatic transmissions utilize hydraulic pressure fo transfer power from the engine, through a torque converter, fo a number of gears. These gears are actuated by clutch packs. All of this activity generates tremendous heal, particularly in the torque converter. Automatic transmission fluid is similar to motor oil however it contains significantly higher amounts of detergents. These additives break down under normal use and lose their detergent and lubricative values. This becomes particularly acute if the fluid becomes burnt, os a result of overheating. Overheating eccurs when the transmission is low on fluid (the fluid cools the transmission) or when you work the transmission too hard, such as by towing a large trailer. It is critical that drivers check their transmission regularly {once o month) and advisable to have the fluid replaced and filter changed every 12 to 18 months. For the most part, transmissions in cars built after the early - 80's hove little or no adjustment. The days of having your ‘bands’ adjusted are all but gone. Given the cost of a major transmission repair, costing | thousands of dollars, regular maintenance makes financial sense.
