Ernie Crist is completely felled by Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRP) propos- als for the Seymour Demonstration Forest. (Sept. ¥ North Shere News.) Mr. Crist untortunately accepts myth and fiction as fact, which does little to help any informed debate on the subject. What lesson does the GVRD have to learn — that Mr. Crist is right and they are wrong? Contrary to Mr. Crist’s belief, logging and water- sheds do mix; forest harvesting and replacernent has become an essential part of natural resource manage- ment in most countries of the world. For example, the Norwegian capital city, Osio, with a population equal to Vancouver’s, uses a large inte- grated resource-based forest for water, wood products, recreation and agricultural products. The “same old tune about fire hazards and insect infestation, etc.” must not be rejected for its age, nor if ignored will it just go away. In 1930, caterpillars chewed through 1,600 hectares of the Seymour Watershed forests before the attack was stopped and tree salvage and cleanup reduced the tisk of fire and damage to the pipelines. Again, in 1960, smalt aphids ravaged the forests of the Lower Mainland, leaving dead and dying trees ee my Donate organs and save lives Dear Editor: mm ‘i_oun. IO ae 2 a a 4 A yo 5 Bh ~| 7 4. C wena e wh BoD na e Re witich create a serious fire hazard. This placed our watersheds at great risk, but prompt and extensive barvesting directed by GVRD forest managers alleviated this tire danger. A serious problem we face us a society is the arro- gance of many who believe we can solve nearly any- thing with technology including the control of nature. Mr. Crist provides an excellent example of this when he says, “The fire hazard they are talking about is a red herring. There hasn't been a major fire for over 300 years.” (Records show that major fires on the North Shore have occurred in 1840, 1864, 1884, 1910, 1912) and further he says, “With today’s technology, — a fire would pose no problem.” If Mr. Crist has the solution to the devastation and loss of life caused by forest fires, the world would like to know, especially the Forest Services of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Califomia. These areas employed masses of equipment and thousands of firefighters this summer fighting very large fires with the tragic loss of 15 lives. As concerned citizens we should try to become well-informed on this important matter, and 1 would urge your readers to take advantage of the public bus tours of the Capilano watershed to learn first-hand about watershed operations. Eric Crossin North Vancouver kinds of extras, but not willing to Dear Editor: I was very impressed with the North Shore News article written by Bruce Methven concerning the bench donated by those who have been organ recipients over the last few years. Whea I looked at those three smiling faces, I thought how much it must mean to the families who had donated those organs. “The gift ~ of life” it really is. Unfortunately, in the trauma of losing a loved one, it is hard to make that decision, unless the desire to do so has already been stated. Often, so much suffering has gone on before death that the mind won’t accept any more abuse of the body. In the case of accidental death, the trauma is even worse, and the decision even harder. It would save much extra anxiety and suffering, if people made sure their families knew it was their liv- ing wish to grani “the gift of life.” Joyce M.
