category. tt may look like a
keyhole, or a vest with collar. It’s
generally a bit less bulky, some-
what more comfortable to wear,
and is primarily intended to answer
the need for lifesaving gear in
pleasure craft or inland passen-
ger-carrying vessels.

The PFD, the third category,
has been designed with comfort ia
mind. Various types of flotation
are acceptable, as long as the PFD
meets what the Standards Board
considers an acceptable minimum
amount of flotation.

There are all kinds of PFDs,
from ‘floater suits’? and jackets to
vests. All, however, have had to
meet rigid specifications which ex-
amine the fabrics involved, their
colors, and even the thread that
holds them together.

Finally, there's the fourth cate-
gory — devices that can be thrown
to a person in the water. These in-
elude cushions —- which are ac-
ceptable only in vessels less than
5.5 m in length — and ring buoys.
Cushions were accepted originally
to encourage canocists (o use
them, says Roslee, and may soon
be phased out.
