Home Show at B.C. Place in February, promises to be the best Dream Home yet. Currently under construction by the Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association, under Pro- ject Manager, Dan Coates, the home is unique in more ways than one. First, because it is a B.C. Hydro Quality Plus Home, it is being constructed by Certified Profes- sional Builders to adhere to strict quality standards as defined by B.C. Hydro. Featuring increased insulation and energy efficiency, the home has a mechanical air and heat exchange system, state-of- the-art heating and top of the line materials, hence it stands apart from conventional homes in terms of quality, comfort and energy ef- ficiency. Designed by Noriko Oharazawa, under contract with Jenish House Design, the home is 1,998 sq. ft. of well-planned space. Reference is made to several intriguing archi- tectural elements, such as peaked window frames on the outside which serve to break up the struc- ture, adding interest and detail to the overall design. Rendered in cedar siding with treated cedar shingles, the home in Cape Cod gray clearly reflects contemporary styling. Adding to the character and paying homage to the west coast design, are wood-framed windows with fixed wood muntins. Inside, the home is divided into a large living, dining and family toom, kitchen, three bedrooms, two baths and spacious laundry room. The 400 sq. ft.-garage houses two cars and is fully in- sulated. In keeping with the Quali- ty Plus standards, the heating is a gas-powered hot water radiant heat system, and in the bathrooms there are ceiling heating panels. B.C. Gas supplied all the gas appliances including a washer, dryer, stove, fridge and dishwasher. Other features of note, include sturdy micro-lam beams and ‘‘no squeak floors,”’ 2 leading edge lighting system, energy-efficient fireplaces. Construction of the home began in November and is nearing com- pletion. Cleverly designed to sepa- rate into eight pieces, the home will be transferred from its current construction site at the B.C. Gas yards in Burnaby to B.C. Place, where it will be open for viewing during the Home Show. Visitors to the show are invited to tour the own the house. Following the show, the house will again be disassembled and transported to its permanent Brookside subdivision location in Surrey.
