Gee MariLBox | Disaster to happen in WV Dear Editor: West Vancouver and 21st Street nearly had the sad distinction of having 2 runaway vehicle disaster before the city of Kamloops. On at least two occasions in the past year, vehicles have had their brakes fail on a very steep and narrow 2ist Street. One incident saw a full passen- ger car shoot through four four- way stop intersections plus cross a usually busy Marine Drive at 21st intersection. It continued out of control down a stairway, over the BC Railway tracks (stopping a dayliner in its tracks), then finally crossing the popular seawall leav- ing its front bumper in Burrard In- let. The second incident involved a large and heavy truck which lost its brakes following much the same route as the passenger car except on the opposite side of the road as evidenced by the sheared power waiting poles and road signs. It crossed Marine Drive landing in the backyard of a townhouse with a fence wrapped around it. You can be sure there have been other unreported events such as these. Heavy vehicles should be routed from 21st Street to 22nd Street via Mathers Avenue. Twenty-second Street is far more suitable in con- struction and gradient, plus the light signals on Marine Drive are available to assist these behemoths across this busy road. Or perhaps make 21st Street one way north- bound to Mathers. ‘ Just contemplate the odds that none of the vehicle occupants or passersby were seriously hurt in these two particular instances, then go to your nearest Lotto booth and pray. P. Cloutier West Vancouver God bless America Dear Editor: I’ve had a gutful of Greenpeace anarchy, in particular, the insults to our friends and allies aboard U.S. Navy vessels visiting Van- couver. Is there a power boat patriot who would help a lone Australian Air Force vet ‘“‘cruise’? slowly around American ships when next they visit us? I wish to display banners which might also com- mand some media attention. My message would read: © Thanks, mates, for Coral Sea Carriers saving my native land from Japanese aggression in 1942. ® Thanks for Midway Carriers which saved Canada from inva- sion. e The price of liberty is eternal vigilance. @ Thanks, Uncle Sam, for creating glasnost. God bless America. Lest we forget. Russell C. Shelton West Vancouver Stop signs needed Dear Editor: With regard to Speeders cause concern, printed in the Oct. 18 issue of the North Shore News, J believe there should be a four-way stop put in at the corner of East First Street and St. Andrews in North Vancouver. Some people are driving down the road at speeds exceeding 50 mph. This past summer there was an accident at this particular in- tersection. ‘Near casualty every three months!’’ It’s more like every week; which is why stop signs should be put in.
