Outerwear sewing courses offered

SEWERS LOOKING for an am-
bitious project in 1990 might want
to cast an eye towards outerwear
sewing classes being offered on the
North Shore.

Elaine Wyck will be teaching a
one-night seminar and a six-week
course on how to sew outerweaz,
ranging from sailing, ski and golf

The seminar is an ‘‘intensive,
crash course’’ Wyck says, good for
people who don’t have the time to
take the longer course.

Held on Jan. 17 from 7-9:30
p.m., Wyck will discuss the new
“thigh tech’ fabrics such as ultrex,
supplex and tactel as well as in-
sulation, lining and notions
specific to Outerwear such as d'r-
ings, heavy zippers, toggles, ad-
justable buckles, ribbing and
snaps.

The longer Sea to Mountain
Outerwear course runs from Jan.
24 to Feb. 28,

The course covers the same
ground as the seminar but provides
the opportunity for practical
hands-on experience.

Sewers can choose from materi-
al, notions and patterns sold by
Sundrop in the class or bring in
their own.

Wyck estimates an adult ski
jacket costs between $80 and $150
to make depending on the types of
material used and the size of the
jackets. A child’s ski jacket would
cost $50 and a ski suit would run
around $12C.

“Basically, they’re at least half
price to what they are in the “tore
so it’s a big saving if you can
sew,’’ Wyck says.
