MOWeS 16 - Friday, September 29, 1989 - North Shore News 10 Tee GARDEN faerie | Take precautions to prevent: ae ae fireplace doors from breaking COOL WEATHER turns our thoughts to evenings spent in front of a crackling fire. Fireplaces often have glass doors, not only to keep heated air from escaping up the chimney, but also for the added charm that they provide. The glass used in fireplace doors is strengthened but is not un- breakable. If these doors are not used properly, the glass may crack or shatter, posing a danger to you and your family. ‘A few precautions cen minimize the risk of breakage: © Start the fire slowly to allow the glass to warm gradually. A roaring fire wastes fuei and can cause breakage of glass through thermal shock. e Do not use a fireplace as a prime source of space heating by building an overly large fire. In- bf CA This NORTH VANCOUVER 986-0388 stead maintain a medium-sized blaze through proper use of the damper. © Do not leave a fire unattended for long periods. Let it burn down before retiring for the night. e Never use highly flammable liquids to start or ‘‘freshen up”’ a fire. Explosive ignition with these fluids could warp the door frame or damage the glass panels, *A fireplace is not an _ in- cinerator. Avoid burning painted, lacquered or plastic-coated wooed, excelsior or scrap lumber and cardboard. Even small explosions, in the confined space of the fireplace, caused by the flash ig- niting of these materials can blow ‘out the glass. ° If burning manufactured logs, follow the caution labels and in- structions explicitly. © Build a fire at least eight in- ches from the glass doors; close the metal mesh screens if they are present. Ensure that no logs or other objects press against the glass. *Do not slam the doors or otherwise jar them. e If scratches or nicks appear in the glass panels they should be replaced, since these imperfections can cause the glass to shatter when heated and cooled constantly. The glass should be replaced with special fireplace glass — ordinary glass is not suitable for use with fireplaces. eKeep glass clean to reduce temperature strain on the glass — clean the glass when it is cool to avoid sudden breaks due to temperature changes, and use a non-abrasive cleaner that won’t scratch the glass. ‘s For You.
