* RIAL ET TAI ELD OL ERT CAL SE TET DAE ROO LST ge OCTOBER AGENDA Gardening now saves toil in spring GARDENING IN October is a little like buying Canada Savings Bonds. Today, all we seem to be doing is shelling out, but spring will come (eventually) and pay us back with interest. For those of you suffering from the ‘what’s in it for me now!” syn- drome, this is a difficult time to get motivated in the garden. All of the work seems to be geared to ei- ther putting the garden to bed for the-upcoming winter or in prepar- ing it for next spring. If this is the case, I have one gsuall piece of advice for you: deal with it. If you do not wish to live fike an over-worked, under-paid pauper as regards both visual and edible garden production next year, you had better get out there and invest a little of your time this month. Lawn Care — The grass is grow- ing more now than it was over the summer. This means you could still sneak in an application of fast-releasing, high nitrogen lawn food (such as 12-4-8 plus 2% iron). This will supply the nutrients needed to keep pace with this clos- ing surge. This means you must maintain a proper cutting schedule. If you allow it to get too long, you risk thinning and/or a later onset of disease such as snow mould. The same rationale applies to the leaves: rake them up as quickly as possible, before they smother the turf below. — Moss, that creeping invader of most Pacific Northwest lawns, will also be waiting in the wings, eager to fill in the blank spots feft by improper care. The addition of dolomite lime will help to keep this assailant at bay over the wet months ahead. Apply diazinon 12.5 per cent ED using 300 mi in enough water to cover 100 m2 of lawn (I o2z./gal./ 100 ft2.). I remind you it is ex- tremely toxic and should be used with common sense after carefully reading the label. It would be beiter if we could avoid the use of chemicals such as diazinoui since it also has an effect on beneficial insects, birds and over the garden gate Leatherjackets are the maggot- like larvae of the Marsh Crane Fly. They can cause extensive damage to turf grasses by chewing at their roots. The only effective solution to a severe infestation by these beasties is the spraying of pesticides such as diazinon. You should consider the use of diazinon if, and oniy if, you have seen many of the characteristic brown patches in the lawn and/or your house was invaded by swarms of these giant, mosquito-like flyers. at the Reais é up to ge Fall Festiva CUSTOM FRAMES yf”? Flower Beds — Even though some of your annuals may still look reasonably attractive, you should start pulling them out now. They will not last much longer and will only act as a breeding ground for pests and diseases after they have expired. After clearing the beds, apply liberal amounts of bonemeal and work it into the soil. This will build up the necessary reserves of phosphorus and potassium needed ae Choose from a great selection of imported European Frames including Italian high-gloss lacquers in a wide ar- ray of designer colours — all at % OFF PLUS our entire range of Nielsen METAL FRAMES (the biggest selection in B.C.!) and all our most popular wood profiles all at * Offer applies to frames only, mats & glaas at our reg. low prices NEEDLEWORK FRAMING Your work deserves the best. You should begin planting your fall bulbs over the latter half of the month. If you have yet to make your purchases, you should do so quickly. The garden centres will be sold out of some varieties already. Work liberal amounts of washed fill-sand and bonemeal into the soif beiow the bulbs. This will provide increased drainage and enhance next year’s performance as well as the chances for successive years of blooms. Vegetable Beds — Wiih the possible exception of some pur- posely planted winter crops, harvest time should be drawing to a close. When this happens clean out the beds as quickly as possible for the same sanitary reasons as mentioned above. You may also apply liberal amounts of bonemeal and work it into the soil. Afterwards, rake out the beds and plant a green manure crop such as fall rye or vetch. Sow vetch at the rate of i Ib./600 ft2 and fall rye at 1 [b./300 ft2. Once it has attained knee height, turn it into the soil and let it com- post in the ground. This will not only replace some of the organic materials which were Jost during this past year, but also suppress the growth and spread of weeds. Dolomite lime can be added now, especially to those areas ex- pected to produce cole crops (cau- liflower, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and kohlrabi). Do not apply lime to areas reserv- ed for next year’s potatoss; to do so could cause scab. Trees and Shrubs — It’s a little too early to begin major pruning at this time, but don’t be afraid to tidy things up. Remove any damaged or diseas- ed branches as they are found. In the case of disease, pass the biade(s) of pruning tools through a flame to avoid transference to healthy tissue. Miscellaneous — Start re-ac- climatizing your house piants and tender patio plants such as fuchsia and hibiscus to the indoor en- vironment. If you bring them in at night and take them back out dur- ing the day, they will not suffer the same degree of shock. Be sure to check them over for bugs before you infest the house with hitchhikers.
