Michael Becker RECORD REVIEW The Harper Brothers — Artis- try, PolyGram Records 1991 This sextet of young New York- based bebappers put out two classy shows at the Saturno last month at the du Maurier Interna- tional Jazz Festival. Drummer Winard Harper and trumpeting brother Philip Harper grew up in Baltimore absorbing the music of Max Roach, Wynton Kelly and Clifford Brown. Philip went on to play with Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. The brothers combined forces in 1983 to hone original hard-bop chops. Artistry, alternately meditative and explosive, does not disap- point. The energy unleashed in a live forum translates well on CD. The Harpers prove themselves deft and intuitive composers in the bargain. The KLF — The White Room, KLF Communications/BMG 1991 TWO English guys skip through the house of hip hop, walk off with heads full of strange interior decorating ideas and come up with a very interesting white room. No More Tears trickles with fab reggae riddim. Justified And An- cient, a chunk from Hey Hey We Are Not The Monkees is a nice bit of slinky soul. And the dance spectacular What Time Is Love? squeezes sweat from slone. Tom Jones — Carrying A Torch, Chrysalis Records 1991 Van Morrison produces four cuts on the manly crooner’s latest. The bizzare match-up works. But overall the release is spotty. When testosterone-powered inclinations go unchecked and Tom gets too puffed up, things go bad, like on the laughable Killer On The Sheets. When perspective is given, a step back and a sideways glance in the mirror, it’s a real heartbreak high. The sob and throb of a song like Old Flame Blue sees Jones go- ing over-the-top with suitable melodrama. Jablkon & Sveceny, BAN 1991 The Vancouver Folk Music Fes- tival introduced to Vancouver ears a fine contingent of musicians from Czechoslovakia several weeks ago. Jabikon, two acoustic guitarists, a man-mountain of a bass player and brilliant percussionist, fuse elements of Czech folk, jazz and classical expression for a delightfully avant-garde splash ina surrealist’s kitchen sink. The humor so evident at the folk festival performances is tempered by the contemplative violin work of Sveceny oo this recorded outing, The cassette, a Creech im: port, will be difficult to find. Check out Black Swan in Vancouver, The musical adventurer will be well rewarded by the search, Gipsy Kings —- Este Mundo, Columbia 1991 The damenco kines have lean ed not to mess with a good thing. Yes, 30 minute delivery is important to us. But far, far more important is safe delivery. With 70,000 drivers on the road every day, safety has to be our first concern. The fact is, our entire delivery system is geared to give our drivers ample time to deliver. And it‘s important to us that you — our valued customers —- know how we do it. Over the past 30 years, we’ve developed the most efficient pizza making methods in the business, having introduced many techniques that are no standard in the industry. By the time you hang up the phone, we've already started making your pizza. Our specially designed counters put all our fresh ingredients right at the fingertips of our trained crew. Your pizza is handmade in minutes, and placed in special ovens — another innovation — that bake a pizza in less than 10 minutes. Your pizza is usually ready for delivery in 12 minutes. Since our delivery areas average two miles or less, this leaves our drivers nearly 18 minutes to make it to your home. After millions of safe deliveries, we know that’s plenty of time. Incidentally, if for some reason we miss our 30 minute guarantee, we pay the refund, never the delivery person. We're a part of yourcommunity and thousands of others all over the country. We have a shared interest in safety, so we are asking for your help: /f you see any careless driving by Domino’s Pizza drivers, contact the store or call this toll- free number: 1-800-DOMINOS. For us, just like you, it’s always safety first. Sincerely, Dave Black Mark Anglin President, Domino's Pizza, Inc. Franchisee, North Vancouver
