Enrolment numbers in North Vancouver account tor only 3% of the provincial total, so secretary-treasurer Phil Turin is pretty pleased with the school district's share. “We're y thrilled,” he said, heaping praise on the Ministry of Education for “working alongside us. They've just been superb.” Major capital projects focus on. the expansion of three secondary schools: ® Seycove: $4.5 million expansion budget to increase student capacity from 425 to 700 students, with the elimi- nation of 10 portables; @ Sutherland: $3.8 million to increase student capacity from 850 to 1,200 students, with six portables removed; @ Carson Graham: $3.9 mil- Hon to increase student capac- ity from 1,025 to 1,300, with the removal of six portables. Turin says the government Jast year introduced a “portable reduction initia- tive.” The school district hopes ‘to. cut the number of. its portables in half over the next ‘five years — from 94 to 45. “If the environment is pleasant to work in, it trans- ates to the students,” said Turin. “Our schools are, on aver- age, 38: years old. They're tired. They need work.” Additions are also slated for Lynnmour, Norgate, Boundary, Eastview, and . Sevcove has been waiting a long time for its much-need- ed expansion. “I think (Seycove principal ‘Dick Burns) fell off his chair when he heard,” Turin said. The school, with a catch- ment area that includes Cove Cliff, Dorothy Lynas, and Sherwood Park elementary schools, has seen the greatest enrolment increase of all dis- trict secondary facilities. Said Burns, “Each year we've had 50% more kids coming in than leaving. We've now got more classrooms outside than inside.” Turin speculated that the school district would be appointing architects “very uickly” to draw up designs for the renovations. Construction “may start as early as spring 2001.” The construction process for expansion work generaily takes six to eight months for elementary schools and 12 to 15 months for secondary schools, said Turin.
