WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE | Career planning werkshops offered “I'VE BEEN a nurse for 20 years but my back can’t take the lifting any more. I need to change careers but I don’t know where to start.’ “I’ve been at home with three kids for 15 years but now I need to go to work. The only job I’ve ever had was as a receptionist for two years. What should | do’!"’ These are examples of the anx- ious phone calls Womenskills receives every day. Many women need to make important career decisions, but there are few facili- ties in place to help them do so. To help fill this need on the North Shore, Womenskills will present its series of career planning workshops entitled What Am I Going To Do For The Rest of My Life? The series is designed for women who are thinking of making a ma- jor career change or who are re- entering the job market after many years. Facilitators Donna Stewart, a former high school and college teacher, Bev Bradshaw, a former teacher and Canada Employment counsellor, and Carol Anderson, a college instructor and tradeswoman, will offer the workshops on Oct. 19, 26 and Nov. 3 in Community Room 203, Capilano Mall, 935 Marine Dr., North Vancouver. The cost of the three-day series is $75, and there is a subsidy available to low-income women. For more information or to reg- ister call the North Shore Women’s Centre at 984-6009 or Womenskills at 430-0450. ~ IntheWhite Spot labour dispute, eres a builder and acloser. We don’t want White Spot to be pushed by CAIMAW into closing more restaurants. But we may be forced into that. Here's the situation: April 28 Hi CAIMAW and White Spot begin contract negotiations for employees at 19 locations. @ White Spot agrees to more than 50 changes, including salary increases. & CAIMAW insists on fundamental business changes that would damage White Spot's ability to compete and would eliminate 20 percent of employee pasitions. August 27 & White Spot rejects these radical demands. CAIMAW pulls its members off the job, shutting down 19 restaurants. White Spot can’t say yes to demands that would affect the longterm security of the company and its employees, but we are willing to talk. The alternative, if CAIMAW won't bargain reasonably, is to consider closing more restaurants. What's the answer? Kelowna 2190 Harvey Abbotsford 33215 S.
