Block Watch program.

Said North Vancouver RCMP
Const. Cliff Doherty, the officer
assigned to pull the local Block
Watch program together: ‘‘The
response to the program has been
overwhelming — far greater than
expected.”’

The police detachment has been
holding Block Watch training ses-
sions for the public every two
weeks at the North Vancouver
District municipal hall.

Said Doherty: ‘‘The ideal situa-
tion involves eight to 10 homes. In
the cases of condominiums or
apartmeni complexes, attempts are
made to divide into similar sized
units.”’

During the Block Watch
organizational meeting, held at the

host’s home, an RCMP officer on
duty will attend to answer ques-
tions, provide tips on horne securi-
ty, marking valuables and repor-
ting suspicious activities.

The detachment’s goa! is to have
100 blocks participating in the
Block Watch program by May
1989. ‘Block Watch reinforces the
need for improved communication
— not only between residents but
between residents and police.”’

Every Block Watch participant
will receive a quarterly newsletter.
The newsletter contains up-to-date
crime statistics for North Van-
couver, a list of suspicious autos,
people to watch for and crime
prevention tips.

“We're encouraging interested
people with concerns about their
area to call the Block Watch line at
985-0800 to start the ball rolling,’
Doherty said.

Create soapstone sculptures

LEARN TO design and create
soapstone sculptures this fall at a
course offered through Karen
Magnussen Recreation Centre.

Local artist and sculptor Paul
Hallum will instruct the course
which runs Tuesday nights, begin-
ning Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.

Hallum began carving and
sculpting at age 16. Originally
from England, he came to Canada
in 1946, Since his arrival here he

has contributed his art commer-
cially to projects such as Expo 67
in Montreal, the Science Centre in
Toronto, and to Japan and Vic-
toria wax museums, for which he
has designed chambers of horror.

Locally, he is involved with
creating reproductions of Eskimo
art and in teaching the art of
soapstone carving both in the
community and from his home
studio.

The soapstone carving course is
open to beginning and experienced
carvers alike. Participants pur-
chase soapstone from the instruc-
tor at the first class, and are asked
to bring a large tooth handsaw or
key-hole saw and rasp file, pencil
and paper.
