MAIL Bo Sunday, March 19, 2000 —- North Siiore News ~- 9 ear agenda questioned Lauding Joe Mathias’ legacy Dear Editor: Over the last year a num- ber of dedicated citizens have been. working relentlessly ro avoid a repeat of last year's slaughter of black bears on the North Shore. I have to commend the North Vancouver District mayor and councillors for backing the implementation of the Non-Lethal Bear Management Program and am overwhelmed by the fact that our RCMP are already prepared to begin using aver- sive conditioning techniques on our bears this summer. My initial reaction to the headline: “N. Van District backs ‘Bear Aware’ program” was positive. As I read on, however, I became distressed. What the article fails to men- tion is that the B.C. Conservation Foundation, which intends to run this pro- gram, was founded and is sup- ported by the B.C. Wildlife Federation. The federation is not only B.C.’s_ prosperous hunting lobby, but was the major oppouent to the 1996 initia- tive to bring about a referen- dum to ban trophy/sport hunting of bears in British Columbia. A group that is not opposed to killing bears for fun and profit, but has mirac- ulously appeared to teach our citizens and kids how to keep bears alive, is somewhat of an anomaly. This year the amount of media coverage regarding the killing of bears by both con- servation officers and trophy hunters caused a stir within both the hunting lobby and the Ministry of the Environment. Since the B.C, Wildlife Federation recently announced that it was gearing up for a huge advertising cam- paign, I can’t help but believe that Blair Hammond and the B.C. Conservation Foundation have some hidden agenda. Keeping all this in mind, | fail to see how the district parks department staff cannot help but feel insulted by the insinuation thac these people will be “training” them, as was stated in the article. [ also know that there are a number of local people, some of whom I met at the Steven Searles seminar at district hall back in October 1999, who are weil-versed in bear behav- ior and local black bear issues. I'm sure they could take on the task of running a North Shore “bear aware” program if given the opportunity. Doug Carter North Vancouver Off with aprons; on with armour Dear Editor: : was shocked = and appalled to learn about the feminization of education. Although I had suspected as much for years, it was con- firmed for me. by your well researched and soundly docu- mented editorial (March 1). It may not be politically correct: to say this, but it seems to me that ever since we gave the gals the vote, society has been slowly crum- bling: One might say that our social fabric has been wither- ing on the vine. Before women had the vote, crime was lower, children were more respectful, cities were cleaner, and there was no such thing as global warming. When I was ar school, we knew the difference between right and wrong. Students were hit, spanked or strapped if they argued with teachers. Disagreements between stu- dents were settled in the play- ground with a few bloody noses. Justice was clean and ’ swift. Before the feminization of education, students were taught the manly arts of fighting, yelling, and bully- ing. We knew how to take care of ourselves. Virtues such as intolerance, homo- phobia, racism, and sexism were the norm, In those days, girls giggled. They didn’t need to think. How will our sons be pre- pared for battle if they know only how to nurture, care, and protect? Throw away your apzons, lads, and put ack on your armouz!
