6 - Friday, March 11, 1988 —- North Shore News INSIGHTS hy join Norma’s army? Your heart will know! DESPITE THE CHILL that the “Big C’’ word strikes in most of us, the Canadian Cancer Society’s West Van Unit is very definitely an upbeat outfit. it's in the business of life and hope, not fear and despair. Especially at this time of the year when the Unit's office at 650 Clyde, headed by president Norma Sharp, is buzzing with prepara- tions for the April fund-raising drive — the second biggest annual campaign of its kind after the Heart Fund —- with a West Van target of $130,000. It kicks off just two weeks from now, March 25- 26, with the traditional Daffodil Days at Park Royal and the new Caulfeild Centre mall, when shop- pers can make their donations by buying the spring flowers that symbolize life reborn. The Unit is also pre-selling bulk supplies of daffodils to banks and other commercial outlets to hand aut as gifts to their customers. With Easter intervening, the real work — the door-to-door canvass — begins 10 days later on April 6. They're still secking 100 or more additional volunteers to make up the totai army of around 600 needed to cover all of West Van during the following three wecks. This year Norma is suggesting that canvassers think of the two haurs or so that they donate as a per- sonal way of honoring someone special to them who’s been a vic- tim of cancer — many nowadays successfully treated. Her theme: “Only your heart will know"’ just why you're doing it. If YOU can help with a couple of hours of your time from April 6 onward, please call the Unit today at 925- 1952 or 925-1971, Speaking of life and hope and things that only one’s heart knows, they're personified this year in the Unit's honorary campaign chair- man, a familiar face and voice to many thousands of Lower Mainlanders. Vander Zalm’s response to Mon- day’s Supreme Court of B.C. decision that his cabinet has no right to restrict public abortion funds is to be both admired and reviled. Admired fer its indifference to public opinion; reviled for its obvious wrongheadedness. Mr. Justice Alian McKachern stated in his decision that removing abortions from Medicare coverage is in- consistent with both the government’s authority and “common sense’’. Attorney General Brian Smith has said he sees no grounds for an appeal and concedes the province must pay for abortions. But the message is lost on Premier Vaiider Zalm. He has vowed to continue his battle to keep public funds from financing abortions. | Removal of such funding will serve only to smooth the premier’s ruffled religious feathers. It wili not reduce abortions; it will not convince, by some moral bright light on high, women seeking abortions to sud- denly seek parenthood. Kt will merely force those who cannot otherwise af- ford the operation to seek cheaper, more risky alter- natives. The premier has made his point, but the province’s highest court has ruled on the legality of his solution and thereby helped his government out of a no-win situation. We have listened to the blare of confrontation; await the sound of workable compromise. we couldn't have been more dclighted with the parting gift they presented to him — and if you've ever seen the shelf-lined walls of Ed’s home, you'll know why.
