A 20-YEAR-old Canadian interna- | tional development agency, helping business in the development world _and in native communities in Canada, is making its strongest pitch ever to the Canadian cor- porate community. CESO (prounced KESSO), the Canadian Executive Service Organization, recently launched a $315,000 fund-raising campaign with companies across the country. $20,000 of this total is to be raised here in British Columbia. Since 1967, CESO has supplied more than 6,000 highly-skilled, mainly retired Canadian men and women as volunteer consultants to over 14,000 businesses in develop- ing countries dnd native com- munities in Canada. “The demand for our services is far exceeding our ability to deliver,” says Louise Ball, CESO regional manager in B.C. ‘‘In the coming year, we plan to do 400. projects overseas and 1,450 here in Canada, but we simply wil} not be able to do that without increased financial support.”’ CESO is presently supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), ‘fessional and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), provincial. and territorial governments and over 300 Canadian corporations. “We are ‘business talking to business,’ ’’ said Ball. ‘‘Our con- sultants are perhaps the best pro- moters of Canadian goods and services around the world.” . CESO also helps to ease employees of Canadian companies into retirement. It provides them with a rewarding and enriching way to continue to use their exper- tise. “We want to enlist more companies ‘in sponsoring ‘‘customized’?’ CESO projects, whereby CESO uses a company’s retiring employees and the com- pany can select the country and type of project. That way, the sponsoring company has a real proprietary interest in CESO,” said Ball. CESO volunteer consultants come ‘from a broad range of pro- and technical areas. Overseas projects average two months in length and domestic projects two weeks. Travel and liv- ing expenses are covered by CESO and other sponsors.
