Proper chemical balancing
keeps pool water clean

TREAT YOUR pool water right,
and your pool will treat you right
— by providing endless oppor-
tunities year after year for family
fun, recreation and entertainment.

And, treating your pool water
today requires far less time than it
used to, thanks to the wide variety
of automatic pool care products
available.

According to the Canadian Spa
and Pool Association (CANSPA),
chemicals may be purchased in
tablet form and automatic
chlorinators will dispense the pro-
per amount of disinfectant into the
water as needed. Test kits simplify
chemical balancing by providing
instant information on chemical
requirements of the water.

And automatic cleaning devices
take the elbowgrease out of remov-
ing debris from the pool.

Occasionally, however, a special
problem may arise requiring
special treatment. One such pro-

blem is algae, which can develop
even in well-maintained pools dur-
ing extremely hot weather or after
heavy rains. It app.ars in several

color: green, black and yellow.

Green algag may appear us a
greenish cloud in the water or as a
slippery green layer on any surface
of the pool, Black and yellow algae
are considerably more difficult to
eliminate than the green and can
appear most anywhere in the pool.

To control algae, CANSPA
suggests:

e Maintain the water’s pH be-
tween 7.2 and 7.4,

e If algae appear, shock treat
the pool with super-chforinator.
After it thoroughly dissolves and
circulates, brush algae spots and
deposits briskly. Keep repeating as
often as necessary to help the chio-
rine attack the remaining growth.

Cloudy water cun be caused by
any of several different factors. Uf
the cloudiness is greenish, the
pollutant is probably algae. Uf the
cloudiness is not greenish, it could
result from inadequate filtration or
high pH.

Although rain water is nota
pool pollutant, the elements it
washes into the water are. Rain
falling through smog may wash
nitrogen or sulfur compounds into
a pool.

The Second Annual North Shore GARDENS CONTEST is now
underway. Entries are invited from all green thumbs on the North
Shore. The objective of the GARDENS CONTEST is to
acknowledge the individual efforts of residents who have con-
tributed to cormmunity improvement and beautification. If you
spend time in your garden, theres something in this contest for

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. The contest is open to all residential and commercial
gardens.

2. All entries to be submitted to the North Shore Gardens
87 Contest by July 31st, 1987.

AREA CLASSIFICATION

The competition is open to residents of the City and District
of North Vancouver and the District of West Vancouver.

JUDGING

. Judges will be from committee members and
professionals.

. dudging will take place during specified periods from
May Ist - September 15th.

. An entry may be placed in a more suitable category by
the judges.

. The judges decision is final.
. Awards presentations will be held by Thanksgiving.
