NV piano student plays to top mark A NORTH VANCOUVER piano student garnered the highest mark in the province this year in a Royal Conservatory of Music exam and vows to keep play- ing the p‘ano. Cleveland Elementary School student Michelle La- Bounty, 12, practiced for about a year to prepare for the 20-minute exam in which she would win top honors. . **I also went to festivals so I could get different pointers from different people,’’ said LaBounty, who started on the piano when she was four years old. “It did make quite a difference — it helped me a lot,’’ she explains. Although she practices up to 2% hours a day with classical works, she admitted to liking pop music. ‘I listen to the radio like other kids,’’ LaBounty said. “I like pop and classical a lot but it’s hard to say what I’m going to do.’”” In three years, she plans to reach the highest Roya! Conservatory level. Father, Earl LaBounty, said Michelle’s career started with her musical mother. ‘*Her mother is musical — we started (Michelle) at four years old,’’ he said.
