Sgete PIANIST JOINS VSO 44 - Sunday, December 8, 1985 - North Shore News Entertainment Music featured from three centuries HUNGARIAN pianist Janos Solyom joins the Vancouver Symphony under the direc- tion of Rudolf Barshai in the fitth concerts of the CP Air Musically Speaking series, December 7 and 9 in the Or- pheum. These concerts, present music from three centuries, music ranges from Mozart's Masonic Funeral Music, composed in the 18th cen- tury, through 19th century’s Night on Bald Mountain by Moussorgsky to Prokofiev's penetrating Third Symphony and Bartok’s Third Piano Concerto. Janos Solyom’s ap- pearances in Sweden routinely creates headlines like the time he played all five Beethoven concertos with the Stockholm Philharmonic on two con- secutive nights. Born in 1938 in Budapest, Hungary, the young Solyom began his piano studies at the age of eight. Two years Jater he was awarded first prize in three nation-wide competitions, one of them for improvisation. In 1956 Solyom left Hungary and settled in Sweden and he has been giv- ing concerts ever since his official debut there in 1959. In addition to Scandinavia and the European countries, he has also performed in Canada, South America, Israch, aad the United States. Host Peter McCoppin is one of Canada’s leading young conductars. Versatile and at ease with any au- dience, his repertoire extends the entire range from classical literature to pops standards. This season he was ap- pointed principal guest con- ductor of the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony and is also conductor of the entire Musically Speaking series for Orchestra London in On- tario. He has recently returned from engagements with England's Bournemouth Symphony, where he is prin- cipal conductor and artistic advisor. Barshai is scheduled (o conduct the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for a mininum of 12 weeks in each of his first three seasons with the VSO.
