Mailbox Time drivers wake up before others are killed think a little. Please. J. Segal, North Vancouver Dear Editor: On the front page of your Sunday, May 5 edition is another sickening example of one of the poorest driving habits. It is not my place to judge anyone involved in this incident — that is for the courts to decide. But the information your reporter gives sadly reminds me of the all-too-common but il- legal practice of passing a vehicle stopped for a pedes- trian. Speeding blindly through intersections has needlessly cost too many lives. I see that Lonsdaie and 20th (the crosswalk which cost my friend her face, hips, and knees) is getting a crossing light. But, for God’s sake, do pedestrians need a bloody light on every corner to wake stupid drivers up enough to notice them? Years ago, in my teens, when I first started driving, those in my age group cursed the older generation for driving lawfully and safely (in other words too slow and careful for our crazy, high- speed style). Nowadays, it seems that lousy, dangerous driving has spread like a plague, claiming all ages and occupations. I am especially disgusted when ! see police drive across pedestrian- occupied crosswalks, When will this law be en- forced? After how many more warnings and deaths? { propose law breakers of any motor vehicle offense be sentenced to assist in the emergency room at a busy hospital, such as V.G.H., on accident-filled weekend nights. Perhaps then priorities will switch, from keeping a rat-race sche:":'2, to con- sidering others’ lives.
