trivi Samantha Hogg and Monique Hanna Contributing Writers IRWIN Park’s Healthy School Committee has helped make our school a better place. The committee consists of six Grade 7 girls and Mrs. Cairns, Irwin Park’s vice principal. “We started the committee in October,” says Whitney Hartigan. Whitney and her friends Katrinz Fruchauf, Lauren Gula, Bronwyn Mayo, Olivia Matheson = and Shannon Clarke even created a moito for our school. “We are healthy, we don’t fight, we don’t litter, that’s what’s right,” Lauren recites. When asked why the committee was started, Mrs. Cairns answered: “The committee was started because ng to keep it was one of the Grade 7 leadership opportunities.” “We have planted flowers in the front garden of the school, orga- nized contests to keep Irvin Park clean, and have made the school more beautiful,” says Bronwyn. At a recent assembly, the girls performed skits about how to respect our environment and the people around us. “We are planning to organize more contests co keep the school and yard clean,” Katrina says. “So far the only contest we have is the “Cleanest Ciassroom,” says Olivia. “The room that is the neatest gets a prize.” The Healthy School Committee is looking for any donations of flower pots, plants, bulbs, flower seeds, or anything else to decorate our school. “Any donations would be greatly appreciated,” says Shannon. Food Day failings David Carter and Braden Hal! Contributing Writers HAS anybody noticed that the food we get on food days is not very healthy? Irwin Park school gets McDonald’s, pizza, and Subway. Subway is healthy and pizza is not that bad but McDonald's is net too healthy. ‘ I think it would be great if we had one day where only healthy food was allowed and if kids brought unheaithy food to school their parents would be phoned and wold that their kid had unhealthy lunch on healthy food day. Many people come to school with a bag of chips, a chocolate bar, and a sandwich and that is not healthy at al, but other people bring a sandwich, a drink, some vegetables and a granola bar or something for recess.
