Drysdale River Station, a mil-
lion-acre, working cattle sta-
tion with tourist facilities she
runs with her husband in the
remote Kimberley outback
region of northwestern
Australia.

“Our kids, Paul, now 17,
Joanna, 15, and Lisa, 11, have
been brought up being
rewarded for what they do,
not being given endless hand-
outs,” said the former bar-
maid,

“When they have earned
something, they respect it
more. When they have done
well, they get lots of praise and
when they do wrong they pay
for it usually by not getting

‘We have capected them to
be responsible for their
actions, either in work oc in
dealing with other people and
their feelings.”

Koeyers was about to send
Joanna to live with Koeyers*
brother and family in Canberra
(the capital of Australia) to
attend Grades 11 and 12.

Said Koevers, “we are 360
km — six to eight hours’
drive — from the nearest
school, and correspondence
school is very hard to do at
the higher levels.”

She wasn't worried about
how Joanna would cope with
civilization.

“When you live out here,
with no phones for sti etches of
100 to 200 km, if vou get
bogged you get y yourself out

even if it takcs two days which
was our record bog,” she said.

“Growing up with all this,
before we had ewo-way radios
in the vehicles, taught the kids
self-reliance and patience. It is
totally useless throwing a

tantrum or offering to pay
someone to do something for
you. There is no one to hear
you jump up and down and
no one to help you.
“This creates a
willingness to put up
with things going
wrong and the frus-
tration and discom-
fort that can come
with it all. And that
akes kids generally
better able to handle
anything without
complaint.”
What about the

of life in the big city?
