RATE IN The Brake Doctor His Pre Spring Here's What We Do After A Thorough Inspection Motor Vehicle accidents in British Columbia are kill- ing two people and injuring 103 every day of the year. “These are ghastly statistics,” said Insurance Corporation President Rob- bie D. Sherrell. “We all must pay more attention to our driving habits and the safety of others or face run-away premiums.” “In the face of a worsening accident situation,” he said, “the 10 per cent rate in- crease for 1980 may, in fact, not be enough to meet the cost of claims incurred in the year.” Motor Vehicle Branch statistics for the first 10 mon- ths of 1979 show fatalities at 609, up 14 per cent over the same period in the previous year, and injuries at 31,197, a huge 17 per cent increase. “The gravity of this situa- tion is magnified when translated into insurance claims and costs,” said Sher- rell. “The average cost per bodily injury claim that oc- curred last year jumped by Dave Thodeson (Fhe Brake Doctor) Brake Job Special Offer Expires March 31 Of The Brake System _ 4 Wheel Drum Brakes Renew Brake Linings Machine The Drums Repack Front Wheel Bearings Adjust Brakes Adjust Parking Brake Safety Test Drive 6 : Most Popular Models Front Disc/Rear Drum Combination Brakes Renew Pads And Brake Lining Machine Rotors And Drums Repack Front Wheel Bearings Adjust Rear Brakes Adjust Parking Brake Safety Test Drive 8 ‘ Most Popular Models tf Necessary, Additional Parts And Labour Extra Alignment Special *1]7° Most Popular Models Here’s What We Do After A Thorough Inspection Of The Steering And Suspension Components @ Check And Inflate Tires To Correct Pressure © Adjust Camber-Caster * Reset Toe-In eSafety Road Test © If Necessary, Additional Parts And Labour Extra Snow Tire Removing And Tire Remounting Available NORTH VAN AUTO BRAKE LTD. Im- ported parts from Japan and Europe have increased 19 per cent’a year, for a 56 per cent increase over three years. Accident Benefits in the past - “Unfortunately, these in- year. Sherrell said the Insurance Corporation while con- stantly striving to achieve a break-even situation every year, is “suffering a severe pressure squeeze from two sides: one is from the grow- ing carnage resulting from driver performance on our streets and highways, the other is from escalating in- flation.” PARTS PRICES RISE Expanding on the situa- | tion, Sherrell explained that the prices of new vehicle parts produced in North America, are increasing on an average of 22 per cent a year and have increased 67 per cent in three years. Parts supplied by one major creases do not take into con- sideration ongoing changes in the dollar,” he said. “When the value of the Canadian dollar drops, we must pay more for American, European and Japanese parts.” Increased costs are hitting the Corporation from all sides. “Most people have no idea of the bills that must be paid following an accident,” he said. “These range from payments for ambulances, police reports, hospital ac- commodation, services of doctors, dentists, and chiropractors, rehabilitation expenses, loss of wages, disability, death benefits, . and physical damage to name a few. The Corporation describes all potential claims over $50,000 as “Catastrophic.” Between March 1974 and February 1979 there were 6,492 cases. During the last 10 months of 1979 the number of catastrophic cases recorded with the Cor- poration rose by 2,340 or 36 per cent. The number of claims over $300,000 has not in- creased to any great extent, but the average dollar amount of these large claims is steadily rising.
