WEST VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL by Maureen Curtis Over 50 local residents signed a petition asking that West Van- couver District Council close the beach at 10 p.m. nightly. At a council meeting Monday, petitioner Joanne Oben described problems at the beach, including loud music, illegal fires, slamming car doors, street gatherings and fittering. “This is not acceptable in our neighborhood,”’ said Oben. Seniors feel particularly threat- ened by disruptions at the beach, according to Oben, Although the beach has just one access, parks director Kevin Pike said it would be difficult to close the beach and police the closure. “Sandy Cove has been ‘mecca’ for young people on evenings for decades,’’ said Pike. Mayor Mark Sager requested a record of all the complaints about activities at Sandy Cove beach made by area residents during the past summer.
