On Monday night, West Vancouver council voted unanimously to cxccute the Cypress Provincial Park Sewage Services Agreement with B.C. Parks, allow- ing it to. officially begin operating a private line connecting, the operations of Cypress Bowl Recreations Lad. (CBRL) to the municipal sewage system. The hook-up has actually been in temporary use since council gave its permission at the end of July. The sewage connection is part of an original master plan laid outin 1995, Upgrades were needed because more visitors were travelling to the park each year, and both B.C. Parks and CBRL, which purchased the commercial operation within the provincial park in 1984, recognized the need for improved facilities. ; According to CBRL marketing manager Matthew Broadbent, paid visits te the park last winter — including downhill, skiers, snowboarders, cross-country skiers and tobogganers — numbered more than 500,000. According to B.C. Parks figures, there were about 1.5 million visits made to Cypress in total in 1999. Uni the sewer connection was completed the mountain relied on tanker trucks to ship raw sewage from its vacuum -operated toilets, outhouses and con- struction-style portable toilets to the sewage treatment plant in Tona. With the connection to West Vancouver's system in place, that’s no longer necessary. “Any time you can take a truckload of sewage off the read [ think that's a good thing,” said Broadbent yesterday afternoon. As well as better washroom facilities, CBRL's master plan to improve the mountain's d; facilities includes: Ba new high-speed quad chairlift or gondola to the top of Mount Strachat Bwo new quad chairs — one of which, the Sunrise Chair, was installed tor son; Bthree new double chairs, Banew 100-seat restaurant as part of the upper terminal of the Mount Strachan gondola; Bnew and improved downhill and cross-country mails, Erplcement of temporary trailer buildings in the downhill and cross-country areas with permanent buildings for food and beverage, gift shop and rentals, a children’s and administration; . on iy cay ; a pe : a Badditional parking, and night skiing facilities in crow-country and downhill areas. : apa) Ween ec oN Ae fan eee Smee But the plan has met with much resistance.
