The $87-million project to install the plant adjacent to the North Vancouver dam has been rolling down . the pipeline for the past few years. It was chosen in the wake of debate over improving local drinking water disin- fection. Its construction is scheduled to begin this August. . The. Greater Vancouver Regional District. is a j derail at the best of times. So North Vancouver District’s action is wishful at best. But, regardless of the late hour, North Vancouver is right to raise the water issue. “Current ~ GVRD - plans «call . for juggernaut difficult to... ies into local water quality and dam reha- bilitation at the Capilano and Seymour reservoirs. But the value of those pro- jects is debatable. Especially in light of a recent GVRD decision to undertake a long-term and comprehensive cost benefit study of the entire region’s water resources. Vast water supplies to the east — the Harrison Lake watershed, for example — dwarf the North Shore’s reservoirs and fave the capacity to supply the entire GVRD now and well into the future. Investment in North Shore water resources needs to be made in concert. with an overall plan for water use throughout the region. Right now there’s no comprehensive plan. .
