Dear Editor: Re: Vandalism of salmon stceams (April 7, NSN, 35,000 salmon killed). The recent: massacre of 35,000 young salmon by vandals at the Morten Creek volunteer- operated fish hatchery in North Vancouver outraged responsible citizens ‘throughout our community and elsewhere in the province. After failing to break-in, the vandals cut off water sup- ply to the hatchery, killing Coho and Chum fry about to be released into Lynn Creek. Loss of the Coho fry was a devastaning, blew for Zo Ann Morten and her fellow vol unteers working to restock the creck with this threat- ened species of salmon. In an attempt to bring the vandals to account for their actions, CrimeStoppers, B.C. Wildlife Federation and Coho Festival Society of the North Shore are offering rewards totalling $5,000 for information feading to arrest and conviction of those responsible. The deliberate and mind- less vandalism at Morten Creek should serve as a loud wake-up call on the need for MAIL Box: Reward may net fish vandals vigilance and positive action to protect: all North Shore streams against irresponsible or careless behaviour that could chreaten them in any way. I can understand the frus- tration of the present council having to deal with this bylaw which seems w be overly complex. However, the intent of the bylaw is correct and only needs to be modified so that it is easier to work with, There are many proper- tics which will be impacted if all controls are removed, apart of course from the areas already dealt with. Also, why should some sections of the district be protected while others are left to fend for themselves. Hopefully the present council will realize what the intent of this bylaw is and not come up with a contro- versial decision. After all, we all know what is said about history repeating itself.
