Edmonton fights Reugh image

Such is the image of a city

that works harder than most
to attract tourists. Friends
were shocked to hear of my
weekend getaway plans. Dan
from Calgary (where else?)
assumed | was going for a
funeral, and Vancouver
Courier editor Mick
Maloney’s (an Edmontonian,
no less) most pressing advice
was to take bug repellent.

The route downtown
from Edmonton’s municipal
airport is equally uninspiring:
car dealerships, strip malls
and Golden Arches. Outside
a muffler repair chain, the
sign reading “Edmonton,
City of Champions” couldn’r
fook more out of place.

The view from the corner
of 104 Street and 98 Avenue
is rather different, though. A
stroll through quiet, leafy
streets along the city’s sign-

josted heritage trail had

school house and flowering
gardens to a. weathered shel-
ter surrounded by knee-high
grass.
