trudging in vain through

Sherbrooke St. I hailed a cab
and asked to be taken to the

minutes it was quite obvious
that we weren't going the
right way.

I tapped the driver on the
shoulder and said, “Aren't
we going the wrong way?”

“Listen lady,” he replied in
heavily-accented English.

The cab squealed over to
the curb in an area
resembling the warehouse
district of. Vancouver. The
driver pointed down the
street. “Antiqaues$” I bit my
tongue and didn’t tell him
that I wanted china and
furniture and not a bunch of
derelict real estate.

We started walking — and
would you believe? There
are no fewer than eighteen
antique shops on both sides
of Notre Dame West bet-
ween Guy and Atwater.
Some are little more than
junk dealers while others
have gorgeous collections of
furniture, china and
silverware.
