NATIONAL HOUSING
starts rose 13.3% in February
to 109,700 units at a season-
ably adjusted annual rate
(SAAR), reported Canada
Mortgage and Housing
Corporation (CMHC).
Urban multiple unit con-
struction moved up 52.7% to
44,600 units (SAAR) while
starts of urban — single-
detached dwellings fell 5% to
47,100 units (SAAR). in
February relative to January.
January starts were 96.800
units (SAAR).
British Columbia urban
starts, on a Seasonally adjust-
ed basis, increased 23.1% in
February compared to the
previous month, despite
fewer single starts. Multiple
starts, mostly condominiums,
rose as much in Vancouver as
elsewhere in the province.
Ontario urban starts rose
3.8%, on a seasonally adjust-
ed basis, in February com-
pared with January.
