OBITUARY

’ BERT BATT, a 20-year North
Vancouver District firefighting
veteran and tireless search and
rescue volunteer, died suddenly

on Friday from a massive heart
attack.

He was 43.

In keeping with his community-
minded outlook, Batt also volun-
teered with $1. John Ambulance.

For his service. at St. John
Ambulance, he received the Priory
Vote of Thanks award, which is rec-
ognized throughout the Conmon-
wealth,

Batt's boss, chief fire prevention
officer Brian Stegavig,. said the
District of North Vancouver’ Fire
Services will miss Batt's fire inspec-

tion and supervisory skills, as well

as Batt himself. |

Stegavig said Batt was responsi-

Acting on his concern for chil-
dren, Bau tatked to juveniles who

fire scene and determine what start-
ed the fire, said Stegavig.

Batt, an outdcors enthusiast, also ~

spent much of his spare time in res-
cue work.

Zihati said Batt likely spent 15
hours a week as a rescue team vol-
unteer.

Batt, a senior search manager,

was heavily involved in forming
precedures and protocols for search
and rescue work both provincially
and locally.

Initially, when Batt joined ‘the:

rescue group 20 years ago. he spent
much of his time training his dogs in
search work, Zihali said.

Batts wife, Lynn Batt, said her
husband did not leave his love of the
outdoors at work: camping was a
favorite activity.

Lynn said Batt was a dedicated

father to his: four-year-old son
Phillip. ;

for Friday at 1 aim. at St. John’s
Anglican Church at 220 West Bth St.
in North Vancouver.
