School teachers, firefighters, and
emergency response personnel who
educate, teach and save lives are not
paid anything close to this amount.
Obviously, these different profes-
sions are not really comparable, but
somehow this doesn't seem right to
me.

Despite the fact that these profes-
sional athletes are actually paid by
the entertainment industry, are their
exorbitant salaries still too high?

I interviewed a few people at ran-
dom to find out what they thought
about the salaries professional base-
ball and hockey players make.

Here are a few quotes of the dif
ferent views that I gathered on this
issue:

“Yeah, [think they are overpaid.
but it's what people want to see.”

“It's supply and demand. They
can make as much money as they
want.”

“Most definitely! think that the
majority of players are overpaid.”

“E don't really care.”

“Ahh, the amount of money they
make: it’s outrageous.”

Most of the people that [ talked to
seemed to think that most profes-
sional athletes are overpaid and that
the sports industry is out to get as
much money as it can.

1 agree with this opinion. ! think
that ever since Babe Ruth refused to

play for Tess than $80,000 a year
back in 1930, the sports industry has
never been just about playing 4
game, only about playing for money.

E guess the real answer to the
question: “Are professional athletes
overpaid?” is yes, but we have no
one to blame but ourselves.

As long as we continue to buy
high-priced tickets for their games,
trading curds, and sports team appar-
el, we're supporting these high
priced entertainers and helping to
pay thier salaries.
