FORMER NORTH Vancouver city alderman Murray Colcleugh died of emphysema last week at the age of 79 in Penticton Regional Hospital. Major Colcleugh was born in Edmonton but lived on the North Shose from 1949 until 1979. when he moved to Penticton. He served with distinction dur- ing the Second World War with the Seaforths and the Calgary Tanks at Dieppe and in Italy. -. When he returned to Vancouver, - Coicleugh spent 37 years working as a social worker and welfare administrator. He was elected as an ‘alderman in 1977 and ’78. North Vancouver. City Mayor Jack. Tom Scott was a fellow soccer coach in the McSween Soccer Association, the first organization of its kind in Capilano Highlands. He remembers Colcleugh as “very dedicated. Whatever he'd do, he’d give 110%. “His first thought was for the kids of North Vancouver.” Colcleugh’s neighbor, Ken Walker, worked with him for years at McSween. ; He said Colcleugh thought ane teur sports: were a good way ‘ keep the kids off the street con, ners.” |: “We worked with one group of boys from when they were seven years old and took ‘em up until they were. 18," ‘Walker recalled, an passes away noting that Colcleugh was coach and he was manager. Walker said Colcleugh took his interest in soccer and baseball with him to city council and always lob- bied for more playing fields. Denley said Colcleugh was also involved in the establishment of the North Shore Recreation Commission. He was “one of my biggest helpers,” Denley recalls. Colcleugh was also one of the founding members of the Silver Harbour Manor Society and was involved in the development of the Lonsdale Quay. He was active in the legion for almost 20 years, filling the roles of both president and treasurer of local 118. “He was involved in the com- munity in many different ways for many years,” said Loucks.
