NORTH AMERICAN travellers have been touring the British Isles for as long as the proverbial cows have been coming home. This year Canadians enjoy a favorable exchange rate as the British pound, for years well over CDN$2, has dropped to about CDN$1.80. London is a logical first stop as it offers a mindboggl- ing assortment of attractions and is the perfect stepping off point to see the rest of Britain. London’s ‘‘golden triangle,’’ -which includes Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey, is rich in sights. Trafalgar Square is perfect for picture-tak- ‘ing and nearby is the National Gallery with its remarkable art collection. It isn’t possible to tour the Queen’s residence but the chang- ing of the Guard, held daily at akes I 11:30 a.m. (arrive early), is worth seeing, as are the Royal Mews and Queen's Gallery museums, which give glimpses of the life of the . royals. There are usually long lineups for the public areas of the Houses of Parliament. Best to be content with a good photograph of Big Ben. The highlight of a London visit for many is the wonderful Westminster Abbey, where kings and queens are crowned, married, and many, buried. Built by King Henry IIIf in £245, it is an amaz- ing church and calls for several hours of sightseeing. Another favorite, the Tower of London, began as a fortress in 1068 and today is still a for- midable looking edifice overlook- ing the Thames.
