The most surprising new char-
acteristic of the new Corolla is its
improved ride and handling. The
previous model had very soft
handling and lots of body lean.

In contrast, the new Corolla is
well-poised, compliant and even,
gasp, fun to drive! A longer
wheelbase and a well damped
suspension contribute to a firmer
but still comfortable ride.

Add to this.a very tight and
secure-feeling bedy, light and ac-
curate steering, and very little
noise and vibration, and you have
a very pleasant driving machine. I
salute Toyota’s engineers on this
dramatic transformation.

The standard equipment fist for
the base DLX Corolla sedan is
comprehensive, including a
driver’s side airbag, variable-assist
power steering, tilt steering wheel,
tachometer (with manual
transmission), tinted glass, 14-
inch Michelin radiai tires and a

available air conditioning system
does not yet use an environmen-
tally friendly refrigerant. I was in-
formed that this will come in
1994.

Anti-lock brakes are a new op-
tion, available on all Corolla
models. Other options include
sunroof, power windows, power
locks, alloy wheels, and air condi-
tioning.

Despite the rather bland styling,
the 1993 Corolla is a winner in
almost every other respect. I
would have no trouble recom-
mending this car to anyone inter-
ested in a compact sedan or sta-
tion wagon.
