Driver points stay part of your record FOR SOME B.C. motorists, an approaching birthday can be tinged with a more than the usual feeling of dread at clocking up another year. Some face a peculiar trembling of the wallet that precedes the ar- rival of a Driver Point Premium Bill. The Motor Vehicle Branch at- taches points to the driver’s licences of those who commit of- fences such as speeding, or who are convicted under sections of the Criminal Code of Canada (crimes such as driving while impaired). Five or more points added to someone’s driving record over a 12-month assessment period means a Dill will be in the mail about four weeks before his or her birthday. This !2-month period ends five months prior to a person’s birth- day. If your birthday is July 1, the assessment for this year’s points would have been Feb. 1, 199] to Jan. 21, 1992. The premium depends on the number of points, and ranges from $135 for five points up to $3,450 for 26 points or more. There’s « table on page 29 of your 1992 Autoplan Motorist Kit. The Driver Point Premium is not a fine. Rather, it is an in- surance premium based on the ABS included in 1992 Jeep TEST DRIVE’S June 5 review of the Jeep Grand Cherokee stated that the Grand Cherokee has four-wheel disc brakes. This should have read four-wheel anti-lock brakes. The article also indicated that the Laredo model is only available with an automatic transmission. A five-speed transmission is stand- ard. An optional outside tire car- rier has been discussed but is not yet available. Greg Wilson apolo- gizes for any inconvenience these errors may have caused. —_— Ken Hardie ICBC. AUTOTOPIC tisk presented by motorists who tun up points on their driver's licences. ICBC collects these premiums separately from thos? for other coverages, but the money still goes into the Autoplan Fund to settle claims. The oid, complicated formula for ‘“‘working off’ points is gone. Now the driver can either pay the premium or voluntarily surrender his or her licence for a minimum of 30 days within the 12 months following his or her birthday. ICBC does not use the points again in future calculations, al- though they continue to form part of the individual’s permanent driving record. Motorists must pay Driver Point Premiums or other debts to ICBC before they can complete any driver’s licence or insurance transactions. For more details, see the brochure, ‘‘Driver Point Premiums,’’ available at all ICBC offices or from Autoplan brokers.
