66 - Wednesday, November 28, 1990 — North Shore News USINESS It’s you who counts the most Japanese ski area. MLA says BC. has lots of energy BRITISH COLUMBIA is in good shape as far as energy is concern- ed, North Vancouver-Seymour MLA and Energy, Mines and Pet- roleum Resources Minister Jack Davis has said. By Surj Rattan News Reporter He added that B.C. has all the hydro power, natural gas and solid fuels it needs. “Oil comes mainly from Alber- ta. There, tar sand and other reserves can meet the liquid fuel requirements of all of Western Canada to the year 2050 and beyond,’’ said Davis. ‘‘Water power and natural gas are our best bets where price is concerned. They are low cost resources.”’ Davis said that because the price of water power and natural gas is regulated by the B.C. Utilities Cssmmission, profits are limited and tke price of electricity and gas will lag behind that of other commodities. “They will decline in real terms. They will have a moderating effect on our cost of living and decades to come,’’ said Davis. ‘‘Our goal reserves are immense. They can be roasted to produce gas and burned to generate electricity. On site costs are also low so British Col- umbia will not have to go nuclear ever.” He added that wood wastes are ‘plentiful’? and that ‘‘co-genera- tion” in pulp and saw mill sites save money and reduce pollution, saying ‘‘it’s a trend in our forest industry which is helpful both from an economic and an en- vironmental point of view.”’ “Oil is our wild card. Used mainly in the transportation sec- tor, rising oil prices invite com- petition from natural gas and gas based liquids like methanol and ethanol. Successive oil crises will speed this process,’ said Davis. He added that the Ballard Power Systems fuel cell, manufac- tured in North Vancouver, burns hydrogen to produce water. Because hydrogen is made from natural gas, B.C. has the resources and technology to “tackle our Lower Mainland smog problem effectively.”’ “Today we are 75 per cent self sufficient in energy. Including ex- ports of coal and natural gas, our trade balance in fuel and power is positive,’’ said Davis. ‘‘With con- servation at home and quality ex- ports to the rest of the world we are playing a positive role insofar as energy is concerned. A good news item for B.C.” r NEWS photo Mike Wakelisid EAST MET West recently as representatives of Seymour Mountain met representatives of its sister ski hill in Japan.
